How to Be a Real Person (In Just One Day)
Published in Library Binding by Knopf (13 February, 2001)
Author: Sally Warner
Average review score:

Awsome!
Kara was an ordinary girl, that is when she was 10. Things have changed since then. Her fathers moved, her moms "crazy". She dreams about an island that she could live on.

Felt like I knew what it was like
My parents are not mentally ill, but after reading this book, I felt like I knew what it was like. Sally Warner writes a riviting story about a teen girl trying to keep it all together; trying to take care of her mother; and trying to keep it all her own business.

I think this book would also be great for parents suffering through paranoia and depression to see what their kids really go through.

An accurate look at the effect of mental illness on a child
Kara Biggs lives by lists. She has a list of rules, instructions, tips, etc. for almost everything you can imagine. From avoiding doing an oral presentation to getting ready for school, Kara knows how to it all "like a real person." Want to know Kara's tips for avoiding having a family conference at school?

1) Say that your parents are away on a business trip.

2) Or say that your grandmother just died, and now really isn't a very good time for your teacher to call home. You can use this excuse twice, and twice only. Keep track.

3) Or say that your phone is out of order, but you will deliver the message. (Yeah, right).

Kara has her lists down to a science. She has to, or people might find out about her home life. Kara's mother suffers from mental illness. Most days her mother stays in bed with the curtains closed and the covers up over her head. Kara's mom has been like this for almost as long as Kara can remember. She has her good days as well as her bad, but ever since Kara's father left them, it has only been one bad day after another. Kara tries her best to take care of her mom and to keep everything looking normal. When her lists don't work, Kara retreats in her mind to "Lonely Island," a place based on her favorite book, "Island of the Blue Dolphins." But sometimes even that doesn't help. She knows that eventually her mother will get past this, but when? Cracks in Kara's carefully constructed façade are beginning to show and people are starting to get suspicious. What if they find out? What will happen then?

Told over the time frame of one day, this engrossing novel delves truthfully into the reality of a child whose parent suffers from mental illness. The author does an excellent job of conveying Kara's conflicting emotions concerning her mother and the situation she is in. As a reader you not only sympathize with Kara for all that she is going through, but also admire her for the strength she has to deal with everything that is thrown at her. Strongly recommended for EVERYONE.

Hugh Nibley: A Consecrated Life
Published in Hardcover by Greg Kofford Books (November, 2002)
Author: Boyd Jay Petersen
Average review score:

Going against the flow
Hugh Nibley is one of a kind - and this book shows that. He is a living example for the rest of us; he has inspired us by calling us to repent. I have always seen Nibley as a prophet more than a historian - no matter what he writes about you end up feeling the need to repent (in Norwegian repent is "omvend" which means to turn around). Nibley is constantly telling us to turn around, change directions and look to God. He has been amazingly consistent in his long life - its fascinating reading. I can recommend this book along with all the many books Hugh Nibley has written.
Boyd Petersen did a good job in presenting Nibley's life by alternating chapters on history and on different topics. I only wish Boyd Petersen had had more of a dialogue with his father-in-law, on many of the topics and events in Nibley's life. Even though Boyd Petersen said early on in the book that he will not focus on Hugh Nibley's life from the prospective of his children - I wish he had included this perspective. For many of us that respect Nibley's life we realise that at times it might be hopelessly impractical two live with somebody that so clearly see and react to this world and all its trappings. All in all this is an excellent book.

Well done, but not overcooked
Boyd Petersen has done the world a favor with this book. It is not perfect, but, except for minor errors, I cannot think of any suggestions for improvement. I felt inspired and grateful for the life of this brilliant, yet humble man who is so completely honest and also deeply good. Thank you, Boyd Petersen and thank you to Hugh Nibley for his countless good choices which make up his good life that is an example to all of us.

A Great Read
This book is simply amazing. I couldn't put it down. This book tells a story of possibly the greatest LDS scholar who ever lived. I recommend this book.

I Liked You At Ten... I'll Like You Again...

Authors: P. Taylor Copeland and Suzi Bliss Kyle
Average review score:

I'd Like you at Ten..., a great present for Mother's Day
Author P. Taylor Copeland captures the transition from adolescence through adulthood with simple, yet meaningful experiences that all can relate to. Reading this book brought me back to a time when I really wasn't certain of my take on the world, or the world's take on me. A time when I looked to my own mother for guidance and acceptance.
It will always be a wonder to me how unique a mother's role truly is, and it's ability to survive through years of constant change while mantaining an attitude of grace. This book has a feel to it as if I had penned it myself! It is genuine, sincere, and classic.

MUST READING FOR ANY PARENT -- PAST OR PRESENT
This slender volume is packed is verses that are sure to touch your heart if you're a parent, if you've ever been one, or you're expecting to become one. Looking to ease the pain of "Empty Nest Syndrome?" This sweet book will do the trick. The sentiments contained therein are universal.

Precious and loving
This is a precious small book that cherishes the memories we all have of our children through the growing up years. Funny at times and sad at times only because it touches the heart .It also offers some good advice. The illustrations are nicely done and appropiate to the subject.

It's Valentine's Day
Published in Paperback by HarperTrophy (February, 1996)
Authors: Jack Prelutsky and Yossi Abolafia
Average review score:

A fun book to share with your children!
Jack Prelutsky has a talent for writing silly little poems about everyday things, bringing delight to young and old alike! In this book, he gives poetic justice to Valentine's Day in the most lighthearted way. My sons, now teenagers, were all fortunate enough to be introduced to this book, Jack Prelutsky, and poetry in general, by their first-grade teacher. They spent many happy moments reading these poems depicting a child's view of Valentine's Day...and I enjoyed them as well! Put this one on your list!

A Valentines Day Book For Everyone!!
This is a great children's book. It is filled with Valentine's Day poems for kids of all ages. The poems are simple and easy to read, and theres pictures for each one, too. This book will surely bring happiness to your next Valentines Day.

A Memorable Read
I love this book. My mom used to read it to me when I was small, and it has always been one of my favorites. I lost my original book many years ago but now that I am an aunt I have searched high and low to relocate it as a gift for my nephew. The short stories in the book are touching as well as humorous and have a way of gripping readers both young and old!!

Adult Victim of "New Math" Finally Knows How to Add!
Have you ever had a struggle or mental block that simply never went away; one that made you feel self-conscious, ineffective, and utterly inept? Well, for me, that bugaboo has always been ' embarrassingly enough ' addition. Yes, simple addition.
I know, I'm a grown woman. I earned a high school diploma, have had some college, am engaged in a career that requires mathematical computation on a daily basis (thank God for calculators and computers), and am a homeschooling mom (thank God again for textbooks with clear directions and for children who know how to read for and can comprehend what they read).
I have never, ever, been able to add two-digit numbers in my head, and have struggled with even the most basic addition of single digit numbers if the sum is higher than 10 (i.e. 8+6=?), without either using my fingers or having a pencil and paper at the ready. My struggles with math are at the most basic level, too! I can multiply and divide, have a basic understanding of algebra, and love geometry. Adding and subtracting make me feel like an imbecile, though. And it's not for lack of trying, either! I've studied textbooks ranging from preschool to college level, hoping to find a way to overcome this challenge, without success. But now I've found the key!
This book is so fantastic; I can't put it into words. But I'll try: First, the artwork is cute without being too cutesy; perfect for boys or girls. Second, the story is well-written, with engaging dialog (i.e. character voice, mood swings, etc.). The mathematical concepts are subtly interwoven in a 'real life' applicable manner, so they make perfect sense and are easily grasped by young (age 6) and old (age 36 and extremely mathematically-challenged) alike. I can't put it any more plainly than, 'I GET IT! After 36 years, I FINALLY GET IT! And now, my children 'get it' too!'
My 'Math Miracle' Book '. Even my mom thinks it's a miracle that I finally 'get' addition!

A King's Review
The king has struck again. He has created havoc in his kingdom by creating too many commissioners. He has commissioners for foul balls, rainy days, and counting to name a few. The time comes when he must count how many commissioners he has. He calls on his counting commissioners who begin the long task. His daughter the princess helps count as well. Each person counts a different way to please the King but he can only follow the logic of one. That person is....... buy the book! This book is a great read for many ages and can be used in and out of school.

What a wonderful math literature book for young children
This book is a great book for younger children in first grade. It goes threw the math concept of regrouping. The children love the story line and also the illustrations. It makes a great read aloud in the classroom.

The Last Days Are Here Again: A History of the End Times
Published in Paperback by Baker Book House (May, 1998)
Author: Richard G. Kyle
Average review score:

Excellent look at Christian Apocalyptic History
This book was required as the text for a course at a local college. We'll written and documented, it allows the reader to research on his own if he is in disagreement with the author. A pleasure to read, I read 80% of it one saturday. Good for the beginner, in that it defines terms used in simple language that makes it easier for the reader to grasp to concepts presented. I reccomend it highly to anyone, Christian or non, who wants to know more about Christian history.

Historical Perspective of Our "End Times" Beliefs
Kyle pulls together a diverse collection of eshatological beliefs, predictions and events in such a way that one can really get a grasp on where we (as the church universal) have been on this issue. Is the dispensational premill position the historically dominant position of the church? What about the church's historical view of the rapture, the millennium or the tribulation. How did the church deal with deviant eschatologies?

I've studied eschatology in seminary, but this book really brings the scattered ideas and events together in an understandable and thought provoking way.

This book is a MUST READ for every pastor or teacher. If you are a layman, get the book. Read it, and then give it to your minister. Before you speak on the end times read this book!

Easy reading. Easy to understand. Moves quickly.

End-Times Scam Artists Be Warned!
There is finally some solid, Evangelical scholarship taking non-scholarly popularizers like Hal Lindsey, Jack Van Impe and Pat Robertson to task. This book is dry in places, but it's handling of the past is crucial to our understanding of the present. The book does a monumental job of documenting end times paranoia from the time of the early church to today. Highly recommended...especially for those who helped make Hal Lindsey a millionaire several times over!

The Last Days: Types and Shadows from the Bible and the Book of Mormon
Published in Hardcover by Deseret Books (May, 1991)
Author: Avraham Gileadi
Average review score:

A Jewish interpretation of a Mormon(Gentile)Cornerstone
Avraham Gileadi brings to bear in this study of the Book of Mormon his understanding of the Jewish literary tradition through his rabbinical training and approaches it with a belief in the divine origins or authenticity of this work. Avraham has laid bare the eschatology of the book using Jewish literary methods and exhaustive internal cross referencing. As a person who avoids commentaries, this book's use of scriptures as a primary source was exciting. In so doing, contemporary cultural assumptions on the meaning of the book shrank away at the presentation of solid methodical scholarship that demonstrates a point and then pedantically presents it again and again. What Gileadi reveals is an anceint eshatological work of jewish cultural content communicating a warning to a modern Gentile nation that seemingly is culturally unequipped to grasp its meaning. Enlightening, disturbing, exhilerating and spiritually moving. As a person who had previously read the Book of Mormon for 20 years, I was astounded to find that I somehow had managed to not see what Gileadi so elegantly shows.

Eye opening and great scriptual study of the past and future
Avraham opens your eyes by showing the state of idoltary that exists in our lives today that mirrors ancient Israel. He really takes the reader into the prophecies of The Great and Marvelous Work which you will not study about in Sunday School.

A Monumental, Wonderful Controversy
CONTENTS: Ch.1 Twelve Diatribes of Modern Israel (e.g. modern idolatry) Ch. 2 The Great and Marvelous Work Yet to Come Forth (e.g. the Lord making bare his arm) Ch. 3 Gentiles of the House of Israel Ch. 4 Priesthood, Patriarchy, and Proxy Salvation

GENERAL Elaborates on Davidic Servant prophecies.

A must for any serious L.D.S. student of the scriptures.

A delightful tale with a lesson for all of us.
It is rare to find a quality children's story that delivers an important message in an entertining way. Laughing day is delightfully written in verse and indeed is such a find. It's my niece's favorite book.

Letting Go of Debt: Growing Richer One Day at a Time
Published in Paperback by Hazelden Information Education (May, 2000)
Author: Karen Casanova
Average review score:

A daily requirement.
This book has become part of my morning ritual. I read the meditation for the day each morning. It helps me to quit debting one day at a time. I've made some real strides in my debting behavior and this book helps keep me on track. A must read for anyone struggling with debt. It'll make you feel better and give you the strength and hope to make it one more day without debting.

Letting Go of Debt
Daily meditations for those who swim through a stormy sea of debt encircled by sharks. The stress of debt is as fierce as any other addiction, affecting us physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, and even causing other addictive behaviors, all of which affects our relationships. In fact, we get so stressed about our debt that, for relief, we spend more. Debt is acquired a day at a time. Likewise, debt reduction and financial solvency are accomplished and maintained a day at a time. These meditations are a welcome adjunct to financial recovery programs or books.

didn't get in debt in a day and won't get out in a day ...
Being in debt is a lonely place to be, and I finally found a simple step forward to a permanent solution, this book. There is a short one small page topic for each day. This keeps me in the solution of becoming financially solvent, each day. The topics are simple and reaffirming, along with suggestions that most people perhaps do without thinking, but for those that have gotten into debt, the topics are the ladder out of our problem. Previously I bought "How to Get Out of Debt, Stay Out of Debt & Live Prosperously" by Jerrold Mundis but this did not change my spending behavior even though I read it cover to cover.
